It’s always good to get back on the salt.
For this year, we decided to make some last minute changes to my trusty Triumph 250. Installed a longer intake manifold, which meant changing the frame to accommodate. We also installed 650 valves, and went from a 28 to a 32 mm carb. Unfortunately, when we got out to the Flats, it turned out the gearing was all wrong. As soon as I shifted to fourth, it went totally flat.

Still, I was able to make five passes, and that certainly beats standing and watching everyone else run. Now to get ready for next year….

Working on by bike in the pits. Every vehicle is required to have a tarp under the machine so no oil spills on the salt surface. We want to make sure the Bonneville salt is around for future generations.

Pushing the bike to staging there are thousands of thoughts going through my mind, but I need to concentrate on the run ahead of me.

Before the run I check with the flagman, getting an update on the salt conditions.

I'm ready.

Getting started -- oops, I'm in second gear, gotta downshift and hope I didn't fry the clutch.

Going past the 1-mile marker, control is a matter of shifting my weight. If I scoot forward on the seat, the rear end gets loose; scoot back on the seat and the front end gets loose. I’ve got to keep everything balanced to maintain control.

After the run, I'm happy and ready to relax. Now I'm ready for a "Blue Motorcycle" crowned with Fast Salt Margarita Salt.
